The Evolution of Religion
Prof. Diamond argues that religion has encompassed at least four independent components that have arisen or disappeared at different stages of development of human societies over the last 10,000 years.
Diamond is a supremely talented theorist and gifted story teller. Give this 82 minute long lecture your undivided attention and you won’t be disappointed.
Is it not a concession of bewilderment, of stagnant ignorance to accept that overwhelming adversity is all part of god’s divine and ineffable plan, that trials running the gamut from trivial to extraordinary are all emergences of something “too big for people to understand?” Some apologists claim that resigning to god’s will beautifies, colors life. I believe just the opposite. I believe that in a world of countless mysteries, we dilute our innate curiosity by not allowing wonder to peruse its own answers through logical means. What a shame it is that so many people temper their curiosity in nature with supernatural answers: “It is god’s will.” Apologists can’t have much fun playing a game of Clue. The murderer was always god with godly omnipotence in god’s universe.
